Night of the Comet Review

So I‘ve decided  I need to watch more 80’s horror films since there is an abundance of them that I have never seen. So with help of Netflix streaming they managed to put a lot of horror films on there. Some are horrible but there are a number of hidden gems and other must sees.

I don’t remember where I first read about Night of the Comet but it didn’t originally struck me as something I needed to watch immediately. I had put it off for a while. I do have a tendency to stray away from 80’s horror films because they reach that point of campy that I can’t get past. Its too much for me and its not enjoyable enough to want to watch it. I feel like I’m not the only like that. Also, the horrible horrible acting just distracts from any emotional investment. I know this is a hard thing to be picky about with horror films but the acting needs to be at least semi-decent. So in case you’re  like me and these things are distracting Night of the Comet  should be okay with you.

PLOT SUMMARY:

The story centers around sisters Regina and Samantha. The whole world is out to celebrate a comet that will be passing by the earth and cause a spectacle in the skies. Most people of course are out in the streets throwing parties. Other people think there is too much of a coincidence that the last time the comet passed earth was shortly before the dinosaurs went extinct. Turns out they were right to be worried. Almost everyone on earth is instantly turned to dust. Our main characters were luckily not outside when the comet passed so they survived it. Regina who spent the night at the movie theater she works at heads home.

Blu-Ray News 1/10/12

Hey just thought I'd let the special people who  read this blog know that Anchor Bay announced today that they were releasing the first every version of Battle Royale for North America. Its looks like a pretty sweet deal and includes the original film and the sequel. Here is a link to Amazon's order info for it: BATTLE ROYALE!!!

I think this box art is brilliant

I haven't seen the sequel before and I want to see it. Heard its nothing compared to the first one but still want to see it.  I am very very excited for this. Are any of you going to pre-order this? Have you seen the sequel?

Now Onto the Movies: New Beverly Cinema Marathon

Beyond the Door

That tag line is just awful.

This was the first film of the night. I had never heard of at the very least seen this film, which is the same for almost all the films of the night. The people running the show introduced it as one of the first The Exorcist  rip-offs that flooded into theaters after the success of the film. And I truly believe that is the best way to describe this movie.

To give you a quick synopsis of the film. Happy family with Mother, Father, daughter and son living their life in San Francisco oh so blissfully. Then the wife, Jessica,  reveals she is pregnant to her husband. Of course it is possessed throughout the film. So her health and mental well being slowly degrades and it becomes more evident that she’s possessed in Exorcist fashion her face looks messed up and is puking green.

I am back from the dead

I apologize to anyone who might be reading this. I had a lot of things hit me at once and thought I was going to really stop doing the blog. I just moved, had some employment opportunities that looked promising and then were taken away, but I wanted to keep writing and try to indulge myself and in horror. I will keep writing and rolling out posts I had pre-written from a while ago. I hope you tell your friends and start commenting on these.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Hey everyone. Make sure you eat lots today and enjoy the day off. Don't be a slouch all day Amazon has started their black friday deals and there are a lot of sweet blu-rays and DVDs that have some good prices. I would recommend checking it out before you go into a Turkey Coma.

Here is the trailer for a movie that is appropriate for Thanksgiving, and it's available to watch on Hulu and is on Netflix. Enjoy!

Adventures in Horror and other thoughts

With part of my agreement with myself when I moved to LA I wanted to try and see a lot more and experience a lot more that I had for various reasons ignored or passed over while being in Philadelphia.  This includes watching more and more variety, AKA my list of shame (Coming soon!). Doing more, like visiting more stuff and just trying to become engrossed in the culture of the city; also reading more on horror or films in general.

In keeping with that promise to myself I went to something I had never done before and had let the opportunity pass my by in Philly. On Saturday, October 1st, the New Beverly Cinema here in LA did their 4th Annual Horror Movie Marathon. What it comprised of was 6 films shown in a row.  It was scheduled to start at 7:30pm and go to 7:30am. I was invited out of blue by someone and was totally intrigued by it. What really caught my eye with this is the fact that the 5 announced movies I had never seen any of them. Then there was a 6th secret movie that completely intrigued me.

The night ran smoothly it was a sold out event and it seemed like everyone there was pretty regular movie goers, e.g. no one was a douche. I had expected to have people calling out shit during the movies and ruining the experience. They also did a raffle which I was not anticipating where they gave away a lot of random things including vintage magazines, Joey Ramone’s video tape collection and porn related paraphernalia. Unfortunately I didn’t win so I can’t review a German made DVD of naked women shooting guns....darn!

The Horror Movie Blog Experiment

Does any one else feel things are over saturated on the Internet?  You can Google (...or Bing if you swing that way) any topic and usually find hundreds of results and get so much information. Of course most of it may not be true or relevant, especially when it comes to movie reviews or movie info. You can find almost any-one's opinion on movies theses days thanks to blogging. Well I’m here to not really solve anything with that issue, probably just to add to it.

What I want to try and do is specialize in horror movies. Whats going to make me more appealing than other horror related blogs? I don’t know yet. To be honest I’m not usually that much of a writer but this is something I want to try really to keep me watching more movies. I’m thinking what I can offer is the standard reviews on new movies that I see (mostly horror, but maybe not always). I’ll try and do movie recommendations based on the time of year or my mood. I also want to start my list of shame.

I hide my list of shame with Ellen Sandweiss, but I think they're both about to bust out!

What might make my take on horror films is firstly that I studied film. So I can look at things with a keen eye towards the technical end of things. Also, I’m relatively new to the genre. I have been lots of horror for the last 5 years. Before than I was admittedly freaked out by horror films for many years thanks to a couple bad experiences when I was a younger tyke...I’ll discuss those later.. So even though I have seen a lot I know I have a lot that I haven’t seen and need to see. That's where my list of shame comes up.

I’ll scour the net for a definitive list of the best 100 films and mark off the ones I have seen and start to go through all the films I probably should have seen by now and try and give me new perspective for them.

Does this sound good? Lets get this stuff start right with some discussion. Some of you may not like horror films as much well express it. Try and keep up with my recommendations if it sounds like something you  might be interested in. Any ideas of things you guys might like to see me try out.

**Please note that I have written the first few entries a couple weeks ago so when I started the blog so I wouldn't have a gap in material**
